Slow Dopa is exclusively a luxurious printed magazine book with the intention to liberate us from algorithms and provide a tactile refuge from the online world.
[Dopa]mine is the feel good hormone, centre of pleasure sensation, motivation, mood, attention and reward. When it hits too fast it disrupts the brain’s delicate reward system. The high potency stimuli of the online world is changing how dopamine is experienced. Slow Dopa is an invitation to enjoy more languid, lasting and sustained dopamine release to feel more, notice more, create more and enjoy more in your everyday.
Enter into the gentle rhythm, your natural state.
Curated with care, and somewhere between magazine and art book, Slow Dopa explores the intersection of myth, mysticism, ecology & spiritual inquiry through visually rich editorial, art, illustration, storytelling & poetry. Inspiring, romantic & philosophical, it offers a muse, a way of remembering the beauty in the world, our humanness, kindness, hope and the art of devotion.
Letter from the Editor
I dreamed Slow Dopa into being because I feel an apathy with the direction in the way we communicate and devour content. I’m not satisfied with scrolling and the mass production of information in squares created to sing to an algorithm controlled by a bigger business. Ai can do cool things, but it also has created uniformity, a loss of human messiness, honesty, & passion in the words I read, especially on social media - where the overindulgence of Ai is rampant in a flurry to maintain the upkeep of content creation.
I want time away from my phone AND I want to learn and see and feel and be inspired by art, storytelling, deeper thought and elder wisdom. I want to languish over a large book with a textural weave under my finger tips, with that comforting, now nostalgic smell of papyrus. I suspect I am not alone in this.
I am curious about where we are with spiritual practices and where we are going. I wonder how our spiritual practices, or lack of, alter how we are in the world - with nature, with each other, with the anima mundi. I know I am not alone in this.
Slow Dopa doesn’t want to tell you what to wear, how to eat, how to biohack your way through life. It doesn’t want to tell you to be more, do more or that you are not enough.
It invites beauty, art, devotion, open curiosity, inquisitiveness. It lends more time to ponder and indulge in one thing, one written piece, one poem, one picture of art, one word. Titration. To turn the page and know you can return and it is not lost to the doom scroll. To exist solely for pleasure and intellectual sustenance, to consume art and storytelling not things, not self improvement projects, not 3 second click baits.
